Why Do Escalators Have Those Little Brushes Along the Sides

Their placement is deliberate. The brushes help encourage passengers to keep their feet, clothing, bags, and other belongings away from the edges of the escalator.

When your shoe, clothing, or bag comes into contact with the bristles, the sensation can serve as a subtle warning to move back toward the center of the step.

It’s a simple idea, but it can help reduce the chance of passengers getting too close to areas where moving and stationary parts come together.

Why Is Staying Away From the Edges Important?

Escalators contain carefully engineered gaps and moving components. Although these areas are designed with safety measures, loose clothing, shoelaces, bags, or footwear can potentially become caught if they get too close to the sides.

That’s why passengers are generally advised to keep their feet and belongings away from the edges.

The brushes don’t create an impenetrable barrier, nor can they prevent every possible accident. Instead, they work primarily as a behavioral safety feature—giving passengers a physical reminder to maintain a safer position.

They’re Not Really Shoe Cleaners

One of the most common misconceptions is that the brushes are there to clean passengers’ shoes.

They might accidentally brush away a little dirt or dust, but that’s not their primary function. Their purpose is much more closely related to passenger awareness and positioning than cleanliness.

Once you know what they’re designed to do, those bristles suddenly make a lot more sense.

Why They Matter for Children

The safety feature can be particularly useful around children.

Young passengers may be more likely to stand close to the sides, look over the edge, or become distracted while riding. The brushes provide an obvious physical cue when someone gets too close.

Of course, children should still be supervised on escalators, and passengers should follow posted safety instructions.

A Small Feature With an Important Purpose

The next time you step onto an escalator, take a moment to look down at those seemingly insignificant brushes.

They’re not simply there to clean your shoes. They’re part of a broader approach to escalator safety, designed to encourage passengers to stay away from the sides and moving components.

So, stand toward the center of the step, keep loose clothing and belongings clear of the edges, and hold the handrail when appropriate.

That little row of bristles may not look particularly important—but it’s a good reminder that even the smallest details in everyday design can have a practical purpose.
